Eugenio Suarez, who surprised the Cincinnati Reds in 2015, looks to have a breakout year this season. Eugenio was acquired in 2014 by the Reds as a part of the Alfredo Simon deal that sent Simon to Detroit. Last year, Suarez batted .280 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI and solidified the shortstop position when Zack Cozart suffered a season ending, right knee injury. Cozart is now healthy and will take back his position, which will force Suarez over to third base to replace Todd Frazier, who was traded to the Chicago White Sox in mid-December.
So far this spring, Eugenio has looked solid at third and at the plate, batting .352 with 2 home runs and 11 RBI. Suarez could have an All-Star year if he can stay healthy and get 500+ at bats. He will be on his first Opening Day roster this season and was recently quoted in an interview saying: “I’m a little nervous but at the same time I feel great and can’t wait to be in the starting lineup and play third base.” Suarez, who looks to be a huge part of the Reds’ success in the future, will be a free agent in 2021 and will be arbitration eligible in 2018.
I see Suarez in the middle of the Reds’ lineup or getting on base for Joey Votto. Although Suarez has only logged 10 major league innings at third, as well as some time there in the minors, he will have to play a big part for the Cincinnati Reds as they look to make the postseason in 2016.
