Evaluating Madison Bumgarner’s potential landing spots

MLB: Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants

Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers already have a bit of an issue in their starting rotation due to a lack of depth. That’s come into focus more over the last few days, too.

Jimmy Nelson‘s return went horribly before landing back on the injured list. Jhoulys Chacin was Milwaukee’s most consistent starter in 2018, but he’s struggled to a 5.79 ERA in 88.2 innings and just hit the injured list with a strained oblique. Brandon Woodruff has been Milwaukee’s most consistent starter this season, but he also just landed on the injured list with a strained oblique of his own.

For a squad that’s 54-50 and struggling to keep pace with the Chicago Cubs and now-surging St. Louis Cardinals, they need to do something for this rotation.

The Brewers were one win away from the World Series last year, and adding someone like Bumgarner with his postseason resume would be rather spectacular down the stretch. Milwaukee’s front office does need to consider the southpaw’s propensity for allowing home runs, though. When he’s pitching at Oracle Park, he’s allowing 0.89 dingers per nine innings. When he’s not pitching by the Bay, it goes up to 1.56 per nine innings.

Miller Park is one of the more homer-friendly places in baseball, and with some concerning trends going on in Bumgarner’s batted-ball profile, it’s something to think about.
