Evaluating Madison Bumgarner’s potential landing spots

MLB: Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants

Minnesota Twins

While the Twins may be more interested in whether the Giants will sell off pieces of their bullpen in the coming days, they’ve also been connected to Bumgarner. And, as USA Today‘s Bob Nightengale notes, Minnesota isn’t on MadBum’s current no-trade list, eliminating that potential hurdle.

The Twins haven’t been connected to the lefty much since that initial report, but they did have scouts in attendance for his start against the Mets last week, which went very well from a results standpoint.

There’s certainly some pressure for the organization to make some moves over the next few days because of their shrinking lead in the AL Central. What was once a 10-game cushion over the Cleveland Indians is now just two games entering Thursday. Jose Berrios and Jake Odorizzi are strong at the top of the rotation and Kyle Gibson has provided some value behind them, but they could use another horse.

Even though it was just mentioned for the Brewers, Bumgarner’s postseason experience would go a long way for a mostly inexperienced Minnesota rotation. Him being a free agent at year’s end seems to blend with the club’s current strategy for external acquisitions, too (they signed Nelson Cruz and Jonathan Schoop to one-year deals over the winter, and Marwin Gonzalez to a two-year deal).
