Evaluating Bryce Harper’s potential free-agent landing spots

MLB: Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs have been a rumored spot for Harper for a long time. Even going into this offseason, it seemed like this pairing was bound to happen. After all, Harper has proclaimed his love for Chicago food, is close friends with Kris Bryant, and has a dog named Wrigley.

Chicago’s current payroll commitments — which will include healthy raises in arbitration for some of their young core — may prevent them from actually pursuing the 26-year-old. But when push comes to shove, they could very well become a serious suitor (remember when they swooped in and grabbed Yu Darvish last year?).

As we’ve seen in the past, anything can happen as the winter starts shaking out and players find new homes. With someone like Harper, who will command a huge salary regardless of where he ends up, the process should take a while before truly becoming clear.

For now, all we can do is wait. And speculate.
