Chicago White Sox
If you thought the Phillies had a lot of financial flexibility, then the White Sox are in another stratosphere. Before accounting for arbitration raises and other league-minimum salaries, Chicago has just over $14 million in 2019 commitments, per Sportrac.
Chicago is currently rebuilding but was looking for its young core to take a step forward this past year. It’s not as if they were expecting to compete for a playoff spot, but the hope was to finish with a record better than 62-100.
However, general manager Rick Hahn and his front office could see this as the perfect time to make a big splash or two. Jose Abreu is entering his final year before free agency, so this young club will need some veteran leadership. Plus, the American League Central is incredibly top heavy.
The Kansas City Royals are just starting a rebuild, the Detroit Tigers are in the middle of one themselves, and the Minnesota Twins took a step back. The Cleveland Indians are the on-paper leaders, but even they’re considering selling off some assets.
Jumping in and grabbing some of the market’s elite talent could help them take the step forward in 2019 that they were looking to do in 2018.
