Evaluating Bryce Harper’s potential free-agent landing spots

MLB: Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies

Los Angeles Dodgers

Harper nearly became a Dodger this past summer during the waiver trade period, but it’s still tough to see how Harper fits in LA. As it presently stands, Max Muncy‘s presence at first pushes Cody Bellinger to the outfield with Joc Pederson, Yasiel Puig, Kike Hernandez, and Matt Kemp. Chris Taylor could also find himself in that area of the diamond.

Although the Dodgers have plenty of bodies for these positions (along with prospect Alex Verdugo), Harper is clearly the best every-day player of the bunch. Plus, if the club is able to find a trade partner to fill their hole at catcher and deal from this area of depth, it could open up more opportunities.

The team’s ability to spend has been well established over the years, but they did avoid playing a luxury tax in 2018, which resets their clock. A number of the aforementioned outfielders could theoretically be off the books following 2019 (if not before), so if there’s a time for Los Angeles to reach into their deep pockets, now would be it.
