Evaluating Bryce Harper’s potential free-agent landing spots

MLB: Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals haven’t played October baseball since 2015, which is quite the drought considering they qualified for postseason play six times between 2009 and 2015. They’re also in the market for an offensive upgrade, but current the preference is for an infielder. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be shocking that the club has inquired on the availability of Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt.

The above report from Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch does say that the one free agent who has the potential to shift the front office’s thinking is Harper. Who can blame them? An outfield trio of Marcell Ozuna, Harrison Bader, and Bryce Harper sounds pretty nice.

Failed past pursuits of big-money players (David Price, Jason Heyward, and Stanton in particular) show the organization has the ability to take on a huge financial commitment. With a desire to get back to the playoffs after three consecutive misses, the willingness to win a bidding war might be there, too.
