Ex-Redskins Writer Larry Weisman Rejoins USA TODAY

Football writer Larry Weisman announced the good news that he is rejoing USA TODAY in the magazine division. Here’s the message that he posted on Facebook today:

Larry Weisman I put this out on Twitter earlier. Hope you are following athttp://www.twitter.com/MrLarryWeisman. Rejoined USA TODAY this morning. Not on the newspaper side, though. Working in the magazine division. Fascinating differences. NFL stuff, college FB, I’m already wading in. Thanks to everybody who asked about me the last few weeks. I will have more news soon.”

I’ve been a Weisman fan since before his days with Redskins.com. He joined the official team site for the 2009 season and was released without public explanation April 22. Our story about that event drew a lot of hits for reasons that still mystify me.

Weisman had the most bona fides as a football writer of any in the Redskins stable. Gary Fitzgerald and Matt Terl do a good job lifting the covers behind Redskins Park. Weisman, however, gave a more even-handed assessment of the talent without carrying his commentary to a personal level. He made both Redskins.com and Redskins Nation, the team’s cable show hosted by Larry Michael, a more credible source of team news.

No stories have emerged about a falling out within the writing staff. The organization may simply have concluded that it is cheaper to outsource objectivity. Redskins.com posted a story today debating the offensive line. ‘Skins writers Fitgerald and Terl are joined by ESPN 980’s Chris Russell (See Redskins Roundtable: Is The O-Line Set?) (Answer: No.)

Russell fills the space Weisman would have occupied. ESPN 980, also known as “Redskins Radio,” is a Red Zebra Broadcasting property. Red Zebra is a Daniel Snyder-owned company are are the Redskins.

Draw your own conclusions.
