Face of the enemy! Interview with Canal Street Chronicles’ Dave Cariello

NOQ:The Saints have been lighting it up, again, this season. Year after year really. Yet you seem to only hear “Brady and Manning”. Do you feel  Brees’ name deserves to be in that elite club?

A:Ha! It’s a point of contention for almost every single Saints fan. The short answer is yes, most of us feel Drew Brees has consistently been neglected when discussing the topic of great quarterback play. I will spare you the stats but Brees most certainly holds his own. Which is why it would really be great for the Saints to win just one more championship with him at the helm; I think that would certainly change a lot of opinions.

For two years now, the Bucs have been beaten bad by you guys in Tampa. Then lost in New Orleans in close games. Do you think the Saints and Bucs have each other’s number when it comes to playing in each others home stadiums?

I’m not sure the stadium makes a difference but I definitely think these two teams are very familiar with each other. I think that definitely leads to close, tough games and a constant uncertainty of the outcome. These games are always the most fun and exciting, don’t you agree?

Who has been your best free agent acquisition this season?

Darren Sproles, hands down. The little guy is amazingly quick and exSPROLESive. See what I did there? One quarter through the season and he was the league leader is all-purpose yards with 716. Darren has been absolutely effective as a runner, as a receiver and as a kick returner. Or, as many Saints fans like to note, he’s everything Reggie Bush was supposed to be. I was excited this off-season when the Saints signed him but I had no idea he was going to fit into this offense so well and so quickly. Absolutely great pick up for the Saints.

Josh Freeman is struggling a little this year, but he’s still the undisputed leader of this team, and its best overall athlete. What do Saints fans think of Freeman?

There’s definitely a healthy respect for Josh Freeman among Saints fans. From what we’ve seen his first two seasons, we know how good he is and only getting better. His mobility is probably most worrisome for fans, especially against a Saints defense that’s slow from sideline to sideline.

At the current point in time, he’s slightly less intimidating because of his slow start this season but he’s completely capable of lighting it up at any moment. Chances are that’s going to happen sooner than later. As a Saints fan, I’m worried it will be this weekend.

Sean Payton completely changed the landscape of New Orleans Saints football when he arrived in 2006. What do Saints fans think of Bucs Young coach Raheem Morris?

I would say Saints fans acknowledge that Morris is a good leader of men. They might not be willing to put him on the same level as Payton right now, but what he’s done in Tampa Bay has been impressive. I think now he needs to take it to the next level. This season will certainly be telling.

Thanks Dave! I hope Darren doesnt Exproled on Sunday!! Good One!
