Believe it or not, the Golden State Warriors ticket sales are now equal with some of the most popular franchises in the NBA. ESPN’s Darren Rovell says the Warriors have decided to cap season tickets at an insane 14,500 for this season.
The Golden State Warriors announced Tuesday that they would cap season-ticket sales at the current franchise record of 14,500 and start a waiting list.
“We looked at the experience of other teams who had the opportunity to sell out their buildings on season tickets alone,” said Rick Welts, the Warriors’ president and chief operating officer. “And we determined that wasn’t a good idea. There are people who want to sample our product who just can’t afford season tickets and we don’t want to shut them out.”
The cutting off of season-ticket sales will leave roughly 5,000 seats open per game for the Warriors to sell on a mini-plan or single-game basis.
What it means is the Warriora join the ranks of the league’s elicits in at least one area this season. The other teams currently putting fans on waiting lists for season tickets include the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, and New York Knicks.
That’s three of the most storied franchises in the largest cities in the country, for those who don’t know. The Warriors reaching that level of ticket sales means they’ve found something special here in the Bay Area.
Rovell wrote that the Warriors already have 200 names on the waiting list, which requires a non-refundable $100 deposit. If the Warriors success on the court continues, who knows what number that could rise to.
Another reason for the cap is the Warriors’ planned arena on the waterfront of San Francisco. The new “pavilion,” as it’s now being called, will only hold 18,000 compared to Oracle Arena’s 19,500.
After the Warriors were valued at a whopping $800 million dollars this summer, it seems the new ownership team of Joe Lacob and Peter Guber have finally taken advantage of the potential in the Bay Area market.
If all goes according to plan, the Warriors could establish themselves as one of the premier franchises in the NBA in the very near future. With a reliable revenue stream and savvy front office decision making, their certainly in position to take the league by storm.
