10 MLB players looking to avoid another sluggish April this year

MLB: Spring Training-Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Yankees

Jhoulys Chacin, Milwaukee Brewers

4.54 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 12.9% strikeout rate, 11.0% walk rate in 33.2 IP

When looking at his performance from the season-long perspective, Chacin was actually a stabilizing force for the Brewers’ rotation. Although his March/April ERA wasn’t horrendous, the strikeout and walk rates were certainly troubling. He did turn it around quickly, though — his monthly strikeout rate didn’t dip below 18.9% the rest of the year, and his walk rate was over 10.0% just once.

The biggest knock on Chacin’s 2017 season with the San Diego Padres was the stark difference in his home and road splits. In 100.1 innings at Petco Park, he owned a sparkling 1.79 ERA, while that number was an unsightly 6.53 in 80 road innings. His performance was much more even in 2018, with a 3.79 home ERA and 3.33 road ERA.

Milwaukee will need Chacin to continue being that stabilizing force for the starting staff again in ’19, as this part of the roster is perceived as the largest potential weakness. Their current mix is filled with a lot of unproven talent and will be getting the wild-card that is Jimmy Nelson back more toward the end of the month.
