Six MLB hitters who have taken a big step forward in 2019

MLB: Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks

Amed Rosario, New York Mets

If we go to the other side of town, there’s another New York infielder who is having a career-defining season in Rosario. The 23-year-old’s process was sound in the first half, but the results weren’t really there (.260/.299/.414 line with an 87 wRC+). Thankfully for him and the Mets, the results have been pouring in since the All-Star break (.371/.409/.503 with a 152 wRC+ entering Wednesday’s games).

Rosario’s 2.4 fWAR has already surpassed what he did in the two seasons prior (1.8 fWAR) while his cumulative wRC+ continues its steady climb (75 to 85 to 106). He’s risen his hard-hit rate by nearly 10 percentage points, along with dropping his soft-hit rate by about eight percentage points, too.

The rest of his batted-ball profile doesn’t look very different from 2018, but the improved contact has led to better results. Rosario has cut his infield-fly rate from 11.6% to 5.2%, which has been accompanied by a 100-point rise in ISO, about a 150-point rise in OPS, and a 21-point rise in wRC+ when looking specifically at his performance on fly balls.
