Six MLB hitters who have taken a big step forward in 2019

MLB: Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks

Yoan Moncada, Chicago White Sox

Everything continues to go in the right direction for Moncada and the White Sox. His 4.0 fWAR has exactly doubled what he did in 2018, along with setting a new career high in homers (20) and being on pace for new career highs in OPS (.893) and wRC+ (134).

Possibly the most welcome sight of all is a drop in strikeouts. Over his first two seasons in the Windy City, the 24-year-old posted strikeout rates of 32.0% and 33.4%. At the moment, that number is down to 27.6%, which is still a little high, but much more manageable when it’s on the right side of 30.0%.

While he’s still striking out at higher than a 40.0% clip against curveballs and sliders, Moncada has made huge improvements against four-seamers and changeups. His strikeout rate against four-seamers has dropped six percentage points (30.8% to 24.8%), while it’s gone from 37.1% to 23.5% against changeups when comparing last year to this year’s performance.
