Giovanny Gallegos, St. Louis Cardinals
Luke Voit has taken off for the New York Yankees since the Cardinals traded him away, but Giovanny Gallegos isn’t getting nearly as much attention for taking a step forward this year, too.
Through 55 innings of work, the 27-year-old owns a sparkling 1.96 ERA and 1.5 fWAR that includes a huge jump in strikeout rate (37.3%) and drop in walk rate (5.4%) compared to his career numbers entering 2019. The 14.1 innings he’s tossed since returning from the All-Star break have been OK, too — he’s yet to allow a run, while also producing a 0.49 WHIP and .126 wOBA against.
His batted-ball profile has been fascinating to look at when breaking his season down into two halves.
Gallegos’ slider has been a huge weapon for him, tossing it at a career-high 43.7% clip (31.1% in ’17 and 24.2% in ’18). After watching opposing hitters post a wRC+ of 89 and 185 on that pitch in his first two big-league seasons, that number is all the way down to 8 this year.
