Six MLB players who have erased their slow starts

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles

Lance Lynn, Texas Rangers

ERA through April 30th: 5.45

ERA since May 1st: 3.39

Lynn is part of a surprisingly competitive Rangers squad, but a big turnaround after his first month of play was needed for that to happen. He’s improved his strikeout rate by about seven percentage points during this time, but it’s what he’s done with runners on base that’s a bit more eye-catching.

The right-hander’s walk rate has decreased by a couple percentage points, which has helped his WHIP go from 1.47 to 1.18. Fewer base runners is a wonderful thing, and it’s more wonderful when paired with a strand rate that’s improved from 65.6% to 76.6%.

This trend continues when looking at the various situations. Lynn’s wOBA against goes from .331 with the bases empty, to .287 with men on base, to .276 with men in scoring position. He’s also produced a consistently increasing soft-hit rate (12.0% in April, 20.2% in May, 22.7% in June) and a consistently decreasing hard-hit rate (41.7% in April, 39.3% in May, 33.3% in June).
