The 10 best MLB players in May

MLB: Colorado Rockies at Pittsburgh Pirates

Kenta Maeda, Los Angeles Dodgers

May Stats: 4-0 record, 30.9% strikeout rate, 4.6% walk rate, 2.73 ERA, 3.19 SIERA, and 0.8 fWAR in 29.2 innings

Hyun-Jin Ryu is getting a lot of attention thus far in 2019, but he’s not the only one pitching well for the Dodgers. Maeda’s season-long strikeout rate is down more than four percentage points from last season, but he’s controlling contact much better.

In 2018, he allowed an 18.4% soft-hit rate and 38.4% hard-hit rate. Those numbers are currently at 25.6% and 29.8%, respectively. His slider usage is continuing to go up (30.4% rate), but his changeup usage has jumped eight percentage points to 23.2%. It’s pretty good, too.
