The 10 worst MLB players in May

MLB: Game One-Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals

Starlin Castro, Miami Marlins

May Stats: .472 OPS, .040 ISO, eight RBI, good for a 25 wRC+ in 107 plate appearances

Unfortunately for Castro, a poor start after one month has gotten even worse entering June. His strikeout rate has improved significantly (19.2% to 13.1%), which is great. That’s about all the positives that can be found.

This is frustrating by itself, but it probably goes up a notch since he’s seeing many more fastballs than last year. Four-seamers have specifically been giving him fits. After posting a 130 wRC+ against that pitch in ’18, he’s all the way down at 27 right now, with all of his hits being singles.

In fact, there’s only one pitch he’s faced where he’s produced a wRC+ better than 66. That’d be sinkers, which he’s handled well to the tune of a 125 wRC+. While he’s not hitting a ton of fly balls, what he is getting in the air isn’t doing much for him. After posting a 204 wRC+ on this batted-ball event in 2017, it dropped to 111 in ’18 before his current mark of -12.
