The 10 worst MLB players in May

MLB: Game One-Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals

Reynaldo Lopez, Chicago White Sox

May Stats: 1-2 record, 13.7% strikeout rate, 7.8% walk rate, 6.35 ERA, 5.76 SIERA, and 0.0 fWAR in 34 innings

Outside of that dominant 14-strikeout performance on April 28th against the Detroit Tigers, Lopez hasn’t really had a great season for the White Sox. This could likely be some negative regression catching up to him, though. He did post a 3.91 ERA through 188.2 innings in 2018, but it was also accompanied with a 4.92 SIERA thanks to an 18.9% strikeout rate, 9.4% walk rate, and .260 BABIP allowed.

The hurler’s homers allowed per nine innings rate has soared to 2.07 off the strength of an increased fly-ball rate (47.1% to 51.2%) and hard-hit rate allowed (33.7% to 39.0%).

One noticeable change in Lopez’s pitch mix is centered on his changeup, which is up at 20.8% (it was 15.5% in ’18). The results haven’t been great for him, but they have been for opposing hitters — they own a .333/.357/.615 triple slash with a 161 wRC+.
