The 10 worst MLB players in May

MLB: Game One-Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals

Kolten Wong, St. Louis Cardinals

May Stats: .510 OPS, .102 ISO, 2 homers, 10 RBI, good for a 37 wRC+ in 97 plate appearances

Wong entered May with a 128 wRC+ and .272/.398/.467 triple slash, but what he did in the 97 plate appearances that followed completely erased a solid start to 2019. The second baseman has been two different kinds of hitters depending on where he’s playing. On the road, he’s very productive (136 wRC+). At home? Not so much (39 wRC+).

While his performance against sinkers and sliders has gone up slightly compared to last year, his performance against changeups and curveballs has gone in the opposite direction. After posting a 134 and 136 wRC+, those numbers are currently at 58 and 13, respectively.

It’s worth noting that Wong’s 39.6% hard-hit rate entering this month would easily be the best of his career if the season ended today. It’s unfortunately been paired with a 15.7% line-drive rate, which would easily be a career-worst mark if the season concluded today. For a hitter who hasn’t slugged more than nine homers since 2015, line drives are an important part to his game.
