It was somewhat shocking to see Marwin Gonzalez — Mr. Versatility himself — hang out on the free-agent market as long as he did this past winter. It may be even more surprising to see the slow his tenure with the Twins has started.
The most noticeable change in Gonzalez’s profile is a huge increase in ground balls (52.6%) and a decrease in line drives (14.0%). That could be attributed to him seeing breaking pitches at a higher rate.
Opposing pitchers have thrown their sliders at nearly a five-percentage-point increase and their curveballs at nearly a three-percentage-point increase. He’s struggled against both — the switch-hitter has a -100 wRC+ with a 54.5% strikeout rate against sliders (still hasn’t recorded a hit), along with a -62 wRC+ and 33.3% strikeout rate against curveballs.
