Fantasy fully underway

Week one of the regular season is fully in the books. That also means that fantasy football is off and running.

I eked out a victory in week one but hope to have a larger cushion in week two, we shall see. But that is not why I am writing this piece. After one week of NFL fantasy football you are likely scrambling to fix the glaring weaknesses you failed to address at your draft. Or, you need to make up for an injury (Ryan Grant and Kevin Kolb owners).

Fantasy fully underway
Legedu Naanee appears to be a worthy pick-up as he was targeted numerous times by Phillip Rivers, Monday.

So, who are the hot waiver wire pick-ups heading in to week two?

QB:

David Garrard: Yeah, yeah, he isn’t a great move because he is likely to implode at any moment. But, he has a ton of weapons, plus MJD. He only targeted Mike Sims-Walker twice, I think it is safe to assume that number will increase. Especially after Marcedes Lewis blew up with two TDs last week against Denver. If nothing else Garrard is a strong second option that you can patch a bye week hole at QB with.

RB:

Brandon Jackson: It is likely that this fella was already drafted in your league, especially if it is a deep league. But, if he is out there grab him now. Jackson will get the lions share of the carries with Ryan Grant on the shelf for the remainder of 2010.

Laurence Maroney: I am aware the injury prone runner isn’t always a safe bet. But the Mile High air has a funny way of churning out 1,000-yard runners. Certainly don’t start him this week as he gets used to the playbook. But, once he gets into the offense take a closer look. If he is getting his time there is a chance he could unseat Knowshon Moreno as top dog in Denver.

WR:

Legedu Naanee: Another guy who was likely drafted in your league. Either way, get him in your lineup, especially as a flex player. Phillip Rivers liked going to him last year and continued the trend in 2010. Naanee will likely be good for around 10 targets a game I would think – especially if Ryan Matthews has fumble problems.

Any St. Louis receiver: This may be a little premature, but, Sam Bradford can clearly sling the rock. Mark Clayton was the biggest beneficiary with 10 grabs for 119 yards. But, Danny Amendola got in on the act too. These two will see their fair share of passes, win or lose. Since the Rams still aren’t an elite team they will likely be throwing the ball a lot. Don’t be surprised to see high reception totals from these two all season long.

Dexter McCluster: The former Ole Miss scat back was all over the field on Monday. He is listed as a wide out but he is traditionally a running back. This makes him a very valuable weapon. He won’t get a ton of carries behind Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones but he will get touches. His return skills also appear to be something worth noticing. If he can get a significant number of touches each week he would be a worth-while addition.

Let’s see how my sleepers fare this week. Hopefully I will have more good tips next week as well. Stay tuned for a Reggie Bush/Heisman breakdown tomorrow.
