Wisconsin hockey continues to be popular in the NHL this offseason, as it was announced on Tuesday that Badger defenseman Joe Faust signed an Amateur Try Out contract with the AHL’s Albany Devils. Albany is the affiliate of the NHL New Jersey Devils, who drafted Faust in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Entry draft.
Faust joins five other Badgers to sign professional contracts of one form or another this offseason. He finished this season with his highest single-season point total in his career, amassing 14 points on two goals and 12 assists.
“Joe Faust had his best year productivity-wise this year as a defenseman,” Wisconsin head coach Mike Eaves said. “He can really skate and he is really strong on his skates. That will help him play against big guys at the next level. I can’t overemphasize how skating will be his asset. He’s learned to have a good stick and defend well. He’s got a hard shot that became smarter. That is one of the reasons that he was able to put some points on the board. He’ll give himself a chance to play at the next level.”
While Faust was never a proven point getter for the Badgers (ending his career with just 22 points in 122 games), he was a gritty defenseman that helped UW’s back line in a major way. He was also part of two conference tournament title winners, winning the 2013 WCHA and 2014 Big Ten tournament titles.
Faust was also a thinking man’s hockey player, earning academic All-Big Ten and WCHA honors every year he was eligible to do so in the Cardinal and White.
