We’re coming to the end of the road for some teams so without further ado, let’s get going.
Last week was a very light week for the Falcons as they only played two games. Starting off against Providence on Saturday, after the Bruins scored early to make it 1-0, Ryan Craig scored off a deflection in front to make it 1-1. In the second, the baby Bruins scored again before Sean Collins notched the tying goal off a deflection in the third forcing overtime and then a shootout. In the eight round shootout, Carter Camper scored in the second round of his debut to keep the game alive, though the Falcons would ultimately lose in the eighth round. Mike McKenna made 27 saves and stopped six of eight in the loss.
The next night against Worchester all the scoring happened in the second period. Jack Skille started it off 3:29 into the period. Five minutes after the Sharks tied it, Jean-Francois Jacques scored the game winner and Skille picked up an assist. Jeremy Smith made 28 saves for his 18th win of the season – the Falcons only took 11 shots in the game.
Oscar Dansk-Erie Otters (OHL)
Season Stats 37GP 26-9-1 2.36GAA .913Sv% 6SO
Oscar and the Otters opened the week playing their game against Sudbury that was postponed due to an ice tech digging too deep last week. Oscar got the start and made 22 saves in a 3-2 win in which Sudbury scored its second goal with only a second remaining. Oscar got the night off in a 5-3 loss to London but was back in net on his birthday against Sarnia. In the 4-3 victory, his 25th win of the season, he made 18 saves with Dane Fox scoring his 58th goal of the season with 38 seconds remaining. Oscar would make 32 saves in a 4-2 win over Saginaw and he also picked up 6 penalty minutes from two spearing penalties and a roughing call due to scrums in front of his crease.
Kerby Rychel-Guelph Storm (OHL)
Season Stats 59GP 29-51-80 +37 41PIM
Much like Oscar, Kerby and the Storm opened the week with a rescheduled game marking the third time the Storm and Attack have tried to play each other. Luckily, they actually played this time. In the 6-3 victory, Kerby picked up his second Gordie Howe Hat Trick of the month and scored his 28th goal of the season along with his 50th assist. Kerby’s fight came in the second when the Attack’s Damir Sharipzyanov executed a knee on knee hit on Robby Fabbri so Kerby stood up for his teammate – he also earned misconduct.
Up next would be a game against the North Bay Battalion. In the third with the game tied at two, Kerby picked up trash of a Justin Auger shot that the goalie originally stopped but Kerby was Johnny on the spot and tapped the puck in while diving over the Battalion’s sprawled out goalie. Guelph would win the game 5-4.
The Storm would face the Wolves again to close out their February schedule and, well, it was a tough one as the Storm roared out to a 5-0 lead before allowing six straight to fall 6-5. In the loss Kerby picked up his 51st assist on Robby Fabbri’s opening goal. Kerby was held pointless in a 4-3 shootout win over Sault Ste Marie.
Josh Anderson-London Knights (OHL)
Season Stats 54GP 24-22-46 +24 72PIM
Josh and the Knights opened the week with a game against the Erie Otters. In the 5-3 Knights win Josh scored his 24th goal of the season and set a new career high. Josh was held scoreless in a 4-3 shootout win over Owen Sound. Josh was also held scoreless in a 3-1 loss to Peterborough.
Gianluca Curcuruto-Plymouth Whalers (OHL)
Season Stats 52GP 6-20-26 -11 14PIM
Gianluca started off the week with his first multi-point game since December 11 when he picked up two assists in the Whalers 4-2 win over Kitchener. Gianluca assists came on the Whalers last two goals to make it 4-2.(highlights look like something out of Benny Hill and the sound doesn’t sync up but here they are). Gianluca also picked up another assist on the Whalers’ only goal in a 2-1 shootout loss to Barrie the next night. Gianluca was held scoreless in a 5-0 win over Windsor.
Nick Moutrey-Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
Season Stats 62GP 15-22-37 +12 80PIM
A light week for the Spirit last week. Nick picked up two assists in a 5-2 win over Kitchener. Nick went pointless in a loss to Erie but he did get into a fight with Capitals first round pick Andre Burakovsky in a chippy affair.
Oliver Bjorkstrand-Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
Season Stats 62GP 43-54-97(3rd in WHL Scoring) +34 30PIM
In the Hawks’ win over Spokane, Oliver was held pointless for only the second time during the Winterhawks 21 game winning streak. This snapped Oliver’s 14 game point streak in which he collected 30 points (13-17-30). During the win streak, Oliver scored 16 goals and added 21 assists. In the streak snapping loss to Seattle, Oliver picked up his 54th assist early in the first when he sent the puck from behind the net and caused a scramble in front that Chase De Leo would finish to make it 1-0 2:43 into the first. Ultimately, however, the Hawks would lose for the first time since January 11th.
Dillon Heatherington-Swift Current Broncos (WHL)
Season Stats 6-27-33 +21 61PIM
The Broncos opened the week with a game against the Regina Pats. It was a match up where Dillon picked up his only point of the month on an assist on Jake DeBrusk’s 11th goal late in the second period of a 6-2 win. After being held pointless in a rematch two days later, Dillon scored his first goal since January 31st against Lethbridge. In the second period four minutes after the Broncos took a 4-3 lead, Graham Black drew the Canes attention before firing a shot that Dillon would tap in the off the rebound in a scrum. After some deliberating it was called a goal.
It was announced that on March 12th the Broncos will honor Swift Current’s centennial by wearing special jerseys designed by a former player. Dillon was chosen as the model and his jersey will also be auctioned off.
The next night Dillon and the Broncos took on the Peter Quenneville less Brandon Wheat Kings (Peter has missed the last six games – someone said they saw him in a walking boot) with Dillon going pointless in a 4-3 Broncos shootout win.
We have playoffs to talk about!!!! Despite going winless and pointless last weekend, the Jackets two Hockey East prospects qualified for the playoffs and are taking part in a single elimination game next weekend. First in Orono, Martin Ouellette and the other Black Bear seniors were honored at their Senior Night but ended up being swept by Providence. Next weekend Martin and the Black Bears will face off against Merrimack in the 6-11 seed series. In the regular season series the Bears swept the Warriors with Martin stopping 43 of 46. It was also announced last week that Martin was one of 19 nominees for the inaugural Mike Richter award for outstanding NCAA goaltender.
As for TJ Tynan, he and the Fighting Irish would face off against Boston College to finish the series that started during the Frozen Fenway. As for next week the Irish will face the Boston University Terriers in the 8-9 matchup. The Terriers and Irish just played last weekend with the Irish picking up a pair of 2-0 victories in which TJ was held without a point.
Alexander Wennberg-Frolunda (SHL)
Season Stats 47GP 16-5-21 -5 8PIM
Alexander and the Indians got back to it after the Olympic break and they had a clunker of a game -losing 6-0 to Orebro Hockey. In their next game against Brynas IF, Alexander picked up an assist on the game’s opening goal. Off a faceoff win, Alex got the puck to a dman whose point shot was stopped with Magnue Kahnberg finishing the play. The Indians won the game 5-4. Alexander was held scoreless in a 4-2 loss to Vaxjo.
Daniel Zaar-Rogle BK (Allsvenskan)
Season Stats 51GP 16-20-36 -4 26PIM
Daniel was part of both goals in a 2-1 Rogle win – he picked up assists on both goals. With Rogle trailing 1-0, Daniel passed the puck to Jakob Johansson whose point shot was deflected by Lilja to tie it at one. On the game winner, Daniel passed to Dennis Everberg who found Jesper Jensen trailing the play. Jensen was able to snap a shot home to win the game 2-1.
Up next was a game against Asploven. In the 2-0 win, Daniel was named first star. In the third period Dennis Everberg stole the puck and raced down the rink to find Daniel with a perfect cross rink pass who made it 2-0. Daniel was held pointless in a 4-3 shootout win over Bjorkloven.
Next week Daniel and Rogle will finish the regular season with a game against Djurgardens. Rogle is currently sixth – two points behind Karlskrona. Teams in fourth through seventh place will play for the final spot to play against the top three finishers in Allsvenskan and the bottom two in the SHL for a chance to move up to the SHL next season.
Quickly, in Allsvenskan, Anton Blomqvist and the Malmo Redhawks are confirmed to finish in first place even with a game remaining. Anton has four points in 50 games and is second on the team with 107 penalty minutes.
Markus Soberg-Frolunda J20 (J20 SuperElit Top 10)
Season Stats 15GP 5-4-9 +4 12PIM
Markus and the little Indians opened last week with a 6-2 win over Djurgardens, a game in which Markus was held pointless. Markus picked up an assist in a 5-2 win over Farjestads BK. Markus was again held pointless in a 4-2 loss to Leksands and a 4-3 win over Brynas IF.
As for next week, we’ll have Hockey East playoffs to talk about plus if you wanna see two of my top 20 prospects, (including Mike Reilly who I consider the team’s top unsigned defenseman prospect and current Big 10 leading scorer amongst Dmen), he and fellow Jackets prospect Seth Ambroz along with the rest of the Gophers will be in town for a series against the Buckeyes.
