A semi off week for the Springfield Falcons as snowstorm Buzz and Woody (or some other Pixar character I forget) postponed the Falcons game on Friday (moving it to April). This resulted in the team only playing one game this week. Sunday, the Falcons would faceoff against the Portland Pirates with the Falcons picking up a 3-0 win in which Curtis McElhinney made 28 saves for his league leading seventh shutout of the season one away from Manny Legace’s franchise record for shutouts in a season. Wade MacLeod would open the scoring on a breakaway (goofy angle on the highlights). Fresh from Columbus, Ryan Johansen would then make it 2-0 when his linemates Dalton Smith and Jake Hansen would do most of the work so that all The Johan had to do was tap it in for his 15th of the season giving him goals in three straight AHL games (with a month in between). Three minutes into the third period another player fresh from Columbus would score, off a Nick Drazenovic faceoff win. Taking a feed from Ryan Craig, David Savard would skate along the blueline before blasting it past Chad Johnson for his fourth of the season.
Josh Anderson-London Knights (OHL 39-11-2-2)
Season Stats 54GP 19-20-39 +8 48PIM
Josh and the Knights would open the week with a game against the Sarnia Sting in the 4-3 overtime loss would be held scoreless. Friday night it’d be the Owen Sound Attack coming to Bud Gardens with the Attack picking up a 4-3 win, in the win Josh would add to already career high scoring his 18th of the season. With the game tied at 2 and London on the power play Josh would be in his usual spot camped out in front of the net while his linemates Alex Broadhurst and Knights leading scorer Seth Griffith would work a passing play with Broadhurst saucering a pass to Josh who’d wait for Jordan Binnington to commit before flipping the puck over his shoulder. Sunday the Knights would head to Kitchener for a game against the Rangers. In the 4-3 Knights loss Josh would pick up a goal and an assist and was named second star, the assist would be Josh’s 20th of the season. With the Knights trailing 2-1 Josh would pick up a rebound as he took a check from behind scoring his 19th. Josh’s assist would be a pretty one gathering the puck behind the net and sending a behind the back pass to Chris Tierney who’d find captain Scott Harrington for his 2nd of the year.
Boone Jenner-Oshawa Generals (OHL 31-19-1-3)
Season Stats 44GP 34-29-63 +15 42PIM
Boone and the Generals would welcome the fresh from the injured list Oscar Dansk and the Otters to Oshawa on Friday night. For some reason the bottom feeding Otters have the Gens number this year defeating them 6-1 in November and earning a 7-4 victory on Friday night. In the Victory Boone would pick up an assist on Matt Petgrave’s first off the night for his 28th assist of the season. In the win Boone would pick up a misconduct for arguing a call. A reporter I follow said this game was a total gongshow from the referees. Saturday night it’d be off to Niagara for a game against the IceDogs. In the 4-2 Generals loss Boone would add to his five game point streak, picking up an assist on Tyler Biggs picked up his 21st goal of the season off the rebound of Boone’s shot from the slot. On Sunday Oshawa would finish their road trip in Sault Ste. Marie for a game against the Greyhounds in the 4-2 Generals win Boone would score a empty net goal for his 34th of the season and 100th of his OHL career. After a scramble Tyler Biggs would come away with it finding Boone in the neutral zone and Boone would fire it home for the goal.
Gianluca Curcuruto-Plymouth Whalers (OHL 27-16-5-4)
Season Stats 52GP 9-25-34 +9 26PIM
Friday night the Barrie Colts would come to town and the Whalers would get off to a hot start taking a 3-1 lead into the locker room before allowing six straight to the top team in the Eastern Conference in a 7-3 Whalers loss. Gianluca would pick up assists on two of the three Whalers goals in the first period. Gianluca’s first assist would come off a bit of scrum behind the net when he’d tip the puck to Sebastian Uriva who’d get the puck to Vincent Trocheck for his 32nd of the season. The Chin’s second assist would come off a faceoff win when he’d pass it to Connor Carrick who’s blast from the point would break a Colts player’s stick leading to a loose puck that Trocheck would find for his second of the night. Saturday night the Attack would come to Plymouth with Whalers earning a 7-3 victory and claiming first place in their division. Gianluca would keep his point streak alive in the third period. With the Whalers leading 4-3 Ryan Hartman would curl around finding Curcuruto with a cross rink pass and would blast it past Jordan Binnington for his ninth of the season. Gianluca would have his four game point streak snapped on Sunday against Brampton when he’d be held scoreless in a 5-2 Whalers win. Gianluca has been a tear lately picking up points in seven of 10 scoring 13 points including four goals and nine assists.
Thomas Larkin-Colgate (ECAC 13-11-4)
Season Stats 28GP 3-8-11 56PIM
Friday night would be the 100th meeting between Princeton and Colgate with the Tigers earning a 4-2 victory. In the third period with Colgate trailing 3-1 the Raiders would strike when the Tigers goalie would stop a Mike Borkowski shot with Thomas pinching in he’d pick up a rebound for his third of the season and first since December 1st against Clarkson. Saturday night it’d be the number two team in the country the Quinnipiac Polls (I mean Bobcats) coming to Starr Rink. In the Cats 3-2 victory Thomas would be held scoreless earning a 10 minute misconduct for arguing a call, the second Jackets prospect to earn one of these this week.
Kevin Lynch-Michigan (CCHA 10-18-2)
Season Stats 30GP 6-11-17 32PIM
It’d be a CBJ prospect matchup in South Bend with Kevin and the Wolverines travelling to South Bend to face the Irish. Friday night was a wild one, with the Irish picking up a 7-4 win. In the second period with the Irish up 2-1, Kevin would outwork a Irish player and find Boo Nieves in front for Nieves’s eighth of the season. Saturday night it would be another Irish victory but Kevin picked up his third multipoint game of the season and first since November 3rd (against Northern Michigan). Late in the second with the Wolverines trailing 4-1, Kevin would collect a Jacob Trouba rebound and battle down low before finding Phil Di Giuseppe for his sixth of the season. In the third period, Kevin would take a bit of a beating to score his sixth of the season. Kevin took a pass and drove to the net before getting hit from behind by Stephen Johns. The hit took out goalie Steven Summerhays, the goal was waved off, but after a review Kevin would get the goal.
Mike Reilly-Minnesota (WCHA 19-5-4)
Season Stats 26GP 2-10-12 22PIM
Mike and the Gophers would face off against St. Cloud last week with the teams earning a split. In Friday night’s Gophers 4-2 win, both Seth Ambroz and Mike Reilly would be held scoreless. Saturday night it’d be mostly Huskies until the Gophers would strike twice late in the third. With the Gophers trailing 4-2, Mike would show off the offensive/skating ability people have been raving about. Mike would bring the puck up ice drawing the attention of three Huskies before pulling off a spin move to get behind the net. He then sent the puck out to where his D partner Mark Alt would collect it and fire a shot that the Huskies goalie would stop but would go straight to Nate Condon for his 10th of the season.
TJ Tynan-Notre Dame (CCHA 18-11-1)
Season Stats 30GP 8-16-24 22PIM
As I said above, it was Notre Dame and Michigan getting together with the Irish earning a season four game sweep of Michigan for the first time since 1973. In the Irish’s 7-4 Friday win, TJ would pick up an assist on the game winner but it’s hard from the highlight video to see exactly what TJ did to earn his 16th assist of the season. TJ would be held off the scoresheet in the Irish’s 6-4 win on Saturday to complete the sweep.
Due to a lack of info, I’m going to quickly cover the U-19 Five Nations Tournament that Daniel Zaar and Joonas Korpisalo played in this week. Joonas only played in Finland’s opening game stopping 19 of 25 in a 6-2 loss to Switzerland. Finland would finish the tournament in fourth place going 1-2-1. Daniel and the Swedes would win the tournament going 4-0 outscoring their opponents 29 to 8. Daniel would pick up a point in three of the Swedes four games scoring two goals and an assist. The three points would put him tied for sixth on the team in scoring. Daniel would pick up an assist in a win over Switzerland and then scored goals against Finland and Germany with his goal against the Germans being the game winner in a 7-0 win.
There you have it folks – the week that was for the CBJ’s prospects. Make sure you check back next week for continued updates!
