With the Brewers’ 10-5 win Sunday in Cincy, combined with the Cubs’ loss to the Pirates, the Brewers moved back into sole possession of first-place in the NL Central.
Another first–Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy, and Ryan Braun each homered to lead-off the top of the first–the first time that has ever happened in MLB history, according to MLB.com. Reds’ pitcher Phil Dumatrait gave up all three dingers en route to a 4-run first inning appearance, no outs, and nine Brandy Alexanders following the contest (ouch!).
Big Ben Sheets got the win, despite giving up 5 ER’s in 6 IP’s. Sheets improved to 12-4, 3.54, on the year.
Now at 73-69, the Brewers need to win at least 9 of their remaining 20 to have any sort of shot at winning the NL Central…the Crew finishes up their road trip with 3 at PNC versus the Pirates…a site where the Crew has had little luck historically…Carlos Villanueva tries to keep the win streak going Monday night.
Also, Claudio Vargas comes off the DL…look for him in a long-relief role for the time being. Left-handed hitters Tony Gwynn, Jr., and Laynce Nix will also join the parent club at the Confluence Monday evening.
Clarification…The Brewers’ three consecutive homers to start the game was the first time that that has happened in the top of the first inning of a game; ESPN has been reporting that the Brewers’ three consecutive homers to start the first inning has happened a total of three times, so, apparently, the other two times it was the home team hitting three straight dingers in the bottom of the first.
