Day 1 notes via Tampa Bay Times beat writer Joe Smith:

Adam Erne had a minor medical issue and was just skating ( no contact).

Jonathan Drouin feels like he’s much better this year and embraces the opportunity to make the team. Drouin said, “I’m closer than I was last year I think, it’s not given to you, they proved it to me last year.” Drouin also said not making the team was disappointing at first, but it might work out better as he’s a more well-rounded player now.

GM Steve Yzerman on Slater Koekkoek having surgeries on right and left shoulders, “Good news is he only has two shoulders, can’t hurt another one.” Koekkoek says it’s been frustrating with shoulder injuries, but he is feeling better and will be ready to go for next season.

Steve Yzerman said first-round pick Anthony DeAngelo reminds him of Dan Boyle, the style he plays. Not that he’ll be Boyle, but he’s a good competitor.

Lastly, the Lightning has hired former GM Jay Feaster as it’s executive director of community hockey development.

In other Bolts’ news, with the 21st pick in the 2014 CHL Hockey Import Draft, the Petes selected Czech defender and  Lightning prospect Dominik Masin.
