This past Friday marked the 7th annual Fight Night at Sundance Square brought to our fair burg by boxing powerhouse Golden Boy Promotions. Over the years, the card has grown into something of a “can’t miss” event here in North Texas. It’s easy to see why; Golden Boy brings the star power and the bright lights of national television to the beautiful backdrop of downtown Fort Worth.
All of which why the relative lack of promotional push surround this recent installment of the popular series seems so perplexing. Sure, there was a large throng of people, but attendance was down noticeably and the buzz surrounding the event was all but nonexistent. Rumor running through the DFW boxing community is that this may have been the last installment of the Fight Night at Sundance series. Sure seemed that way with Golden Boy Promotions apathy toward the card. For all intents and purposes this was a local card with one national headliner in Sharif Bogere.
While the local fighters on the card carried the evening, it would be sad to see Golden Boy let this great tradition fade into the sunset.
Questions for Fight Night at Sundance Square
Q: How relevant a prospect is Sharif Bogere?
A: It was hard not to come away impressed with the awesome fistic arsenal Bogere unleashed on Ilidio Julio. Bogere battered and bludgeoned the granite chinned Julio for five rounds before a shoulder injury forced Julio to quit on his stool. It’s hard to gauge how Bogere stacks up against the other junior middleweight prospects, but his cardio is exceptional and that could take him far.
Q: How good is the Eddie Ramirez – Arthur Trevino rivalry?
A: Damn good. When Ramirez stopped Trevino weeks ago is South Texas, Trevino’s camp cited a premature stoppage by the ref. Given the chance to avenge the loss a clearly motivated and in shape Trevino gave Ramirez all he could handle and the fans in attendance a fight to be remembered. Ramirez and Trevino’s styles blend wonderfully together and you get the feeling that if these two fought ten times, we would have ten great fights. While Ramirez took victory in the rematch, we all came away winners after witnessing such a bloody and exhilarating brawl. Best of all, there is no animosity between the two, just genuine respect.
Q: Is Steve Gutierrez back on the scene?
A: Hard to tell. After being out of the ring for nearly three years Gutierrez looked good in battling the hard-charging Jose Ortiz. Was there ring rust? Of course, Gutierrez admitted as much to me following the fight. But what is clear is that despite the issues that kept him out of the ring for years, Gutierrez still brings the fans out.
