It’s long been established that the Twins management and their fans (many of them, not necessarily the ones that stop in at the Rhino and Compass… or really are capable of operating the internet) really like guys that A) hustle and B) look like they’re having fun out there. They hate guys for whom the game comes easily to them, because they don’t have a good attitude.
There have been five names I have seen attached to the Twins. Jim Callis of Baseball America mentions four of them here, Byron Buxton, Mark Appel, Carlos Correa, and Kevin Gausman, while I have also seen people mention Florida Catcher Mike Zunino. Below, I will rate those 5 players based on the likelihood the Twins would select them.
5) Byron Buxton: No smile? He is holding a baseball bat! Show some pep! This isn’t the type of attitude the Twins want to bring into the system.
4) Mark Appel: Appel is either too cool to smile for real or has no personality. The latter would mean he would be a great fit for the Twins, but he is projected to be a top pick. It’s probably the former.
3) Kevin Gausman: This smile just screams smug. At least he is smiling, but nobody likes smug.
2) Mike Zunino: Now we’re talking. Look at that enthusiasm! Look at those teeth! But look at the eyes. He’s not really into this, and it shows.
1) Carlos Correa: Now this is a gut Twins fans can get behind. The easy smile that shows he is happy to be playing baseball, but a certain modesty that shows he really appreciates the opportunity. He’s going to be a great fit in the Twins organization. This is a guy that will lead the league in smiles.
