Five Nittany Lions heading to NFL Combine

The NFL has released the initial roster of players heading to the NFL Scouting Combine later this month. A total of five Penn State players will be looking to catch some looks at the big NFL event in Indianapolis. Tight end Jesse James, offensive tackle Donovan Smith, linebacker Mike Hull, safety Adrian Amos and kicker Sam Ficken all were included on the NFL Scouting Combine roster.

The biggest snub among Penn State players may be defensive end Deion Barnes, who made the surprising move to leave Penn State early to enter the NFL Draft. His early departure was considered by some to be a poor decision, although Optimum Scouting’s most recent rankings of defensive ends rates Barnes as a potential fourth-round prospect, which is not terrible. Still, it is a little bit of a surprise to see he was not invited to the combine. It is a crowded field of defensive linemen that will be scheduled to appear in Indianapolis.

Other Penn State players not receiving an invite include linebacker C.J. Olaniyan, fullback Zach Zwinak, although neither were likely to receive an invite to the combine.

Be sure to follow Optimum Scouting this time of year for scouting coverage leading up to the NFL Draft.
