So some excellent news concerning the Flyers and their depth at forward came strolling down the wire today, in the form of 4 years for 14.5 million dollars.
Not so bad considering he was an undrafted free agent plucked from seeming obscurity, only to turn into perhaps the sharpest shooter on the roster. Read won the accuracy competition at the Al Star game two seasons ago as part of the futures roster, is entering the prime of his career, and possesses a top six skill set.
If there was one guy I had hoped the Flyers would keep, it’s this gentleman. Matt has been virtually all class since his arrival, demonstrates a do whatever it takes attitude, and refused to let this contract situation stew and disturb his outlook on the game and his position with the club.
Things just keep looking up and up for Philadelphia these days, despite a couple of losses in the preseason, the team is teeming with immense potential. The final roster spots are being fought for by Scott Laughton and Michael Raffl, both of which I wouldn’t mind seeing sporting the O&B this fall. Personally the spot will likely fall to Raffl, who is showing everyone that he is NHL ready, with Laughton probably a season away.
In the meantime the club will move forward (no pun) with quality depth, thanks to securing yet another solid player to their wing grouping. Next on the list for long term signings? Sean Couturier, the promising 2 way prodigy, who will spend plenty of time paired with Read on the 3rd line…for now.
