The Philadelphia Flyers, this past NHL Draft weekend made some noise as they traded some key players away but also drafted some players to help build this team’s future. On Friday, before the draft began that night, the Flyers traded backup goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In return, the Flyers got some draft picks that they used in this year’s draft. I think this trade benefits both teams and gives Bobrovsky a chance to start in Columbus. Then that same night, the draft finally started and when it was the Flyers time to pick they selected with the 20th overall pick in the NHL Draft they selected C Scott Laughton from Oshawa of the OHL. Many people thought the Flyers was going to select a defenseman but Laughton is still a good pick because he will have time to develop and eventually make this Flyers team.
Then on Saturday, the Flyers made more news as they made six more picks in the draft and with their first pick on Day 2 of the NHL Draft, the Flyers selected goaltender Anthony Stolarz in the second round from Corpus Christi of the NAHL. With their last five picks, the Flyers went all defense and selected five defensemen. In between all those picks, the Flyers made a big trade as they traded right winger James van Riemsdyk to the Toronto Maple Leafs for defenseman Luke Schenn, who is the brother of current Flyers player Brayden Schenn. Earlier in the season, as the trade deadline was near, many people was talking about this possible trade happening and it finally did. Only time will tell how this trade turns out for both teams involved. This is just one big move the Flyers made this summer; could there be more on the way? We will find out as they Flyers could get Bobby Ryan, Zach Parise, or Justin Schultz.
