When Philadelphia Flyers starting goaltender Steve Mason went down due to a knee injury, they had nowhere else to turn for a backup to Ray Emery, so they called up youngster Anthony Stolarz. The 21-year-old did not play at all in his stint with the Flyers as GM Ron Hextall admitted that he was not ready to play in the NHL but he was the only healthy goaltender that was ready in the minors.
With that being said, 33-year-old goalie Rob Zepp is now healthy and the Flyers have recalled him to take the place of Stolarz to backup Emery. This season with the Flyers, Zepp has a 3-1-0 record in six appearances, has a 2.92 goals against average and .889 save percentage. This is good news for the Flyers because if Emery should go down with an injury they have a more than capable backup in Zepp.
Mason has been on the shelf since February 8 and during that span Emery has been solid helping the Flyers get back into playoff contention. In four games thus far, Emery has a posted a 2.24 GAA and .922 save percentage. The Flyers will need more solid goaltending from both Emery and Zepp as they are currently six points out of a Wild Card spot.
