Flyers Thrash Islanders, Drop Rival Penguins in a Thriller

After being relatively mediocre in the last two games, the Flyers responded by scoring 13 goals in two games.

Against the New York Islanders, the Flyers sorely needed a good performance, and they got it. After their captain criticized himself and every player on the team after the ugly loss to the Canadiens, they responded through Claude Giroux (twice), Matt Read, Brayden Schenn, Zac Rinaldo, and Danny Briere (also twice).  All-in-all, the Flyers completely dominated a lesser team. The weak point, perhaps, would be the defense, which has been weak this season. In the few times that it was tested, though, it (and Bryzgalov) stood firm.

After the thrashing of New York, the Flyers traveled to Pittsburgh, where their hated rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, awaited. The game would turn out to be an instant classic, something to be expected from these games. However, the Flyers seem to have a strange advantage in Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center, having lost only twice when they play there. That trend would continue tonight, as the Flyers put up 6 on their rivals. Three came from Jakub Voracek, who has been playing great lately. Two more came from Wayne Simmonds, one of the team’s best forwards this year. However, the Penguins did not go down easily, scoring twice late in the third to tie it up, but Voracek put the winning goal past (a rather poor) Tomas Vokoun, the Penguins backup goaltender.
