Foles Named the Starter

As fans watched the Eagles/Giants game on Sunday they saw a tale of two halves between the two teams. The Giants started out strong as Eli Manning and company looked like they were poised to get their first win of the season. The Eagles had no momentum on offense and it looked as if yet again the defense would continue to give up the deep ball. Manning hit Hakeem Nicks on a 41 yard bomb down field, which led to a David Wilson rushing touchdown.

The Eagles look horrid on offense, in fact the Eagles did not record a single passing yard the entire first quarter of the game. It looked as if the Giants defense had Vick all figured out. A series of big runs by Vick kept the Eagles drives alive, but there was one play in particular, where on a third down Vick decided to scramble and as he was running out of bounds, gingerly grabbed his hamstring and grimaced in pain. After a few moments he signaled to the sidelines that all was good and the Eagles would go on to kick a field goal. After a three and out by the Giant,  the Eagles had the ball at their  own two yard line. Vick stepped back and almost looked as if his legs were stuck in molasses as he threw a shallow pass to McCoy. Michael Vick would leave the game immediately, and in came second year quarterback Nick Foles.

Foles would lead the team down the field before half time to give the Eagles a quick field goal as so momentum going into the second half. Foles played well given the circumstances he had been placed in, The offense became more pass heavy and Chip seemed to shy away at using Lesean McCoy. After Foles led the Eagles to two field goals he came back on the after a Mychal Kendricks interception that led to a 25 yard touchdown pass to Brent Celek. The back up quarterback wasnt done putting on a show just yet. Late in the fourth quarter , Foles tossed a five yard touchdown pass to Desean Jackson as well. The atmosphere on Philadelphia was already brewing with the idea of Nick Foles being the starter next week in Tampa Bay and the play clock had not yet hit 00:00. The Eagles would win 36-21, bringing their record to 2-3 and tied with for lead in the division. Foles finished 16/25 197 yards and two touchdowns.

So fast forward to Monday mid day and after Vicks MRI results showed enough evidence that he will not start Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chip Kelly announced that Nick Foles would be the starter. Every situation is different and the Buccaneers are not the Giants. They are probably in more of a scramble than the Giants. The Buccaneers just released Josh Freeman and are starting a rookie quarterback and not to mention they are 0-4 on the season. Also an interesting note on this game to keep in mind. The Buccaneers are looking for revenge after last season when then rookie quarterback Nick Foles led the Eagles down the field and threw a game winning touchdown to Jeremy Maclin as time expired.  Foles will have a solid game even though the Bucs have bolstered their secondary with Darelle Revis as the star corner back.  Foles will have to be ready to put on an aerial assault because this Bucs team shoud not be taken lightly. We will see how it all plays out for Nick Foles as it may be the start of a new era if he makes the most of his opportunity. After all, Vick got his starting job after Kevin Kolb went down to a concussion on his first snap as an Eagle.
