Football Notes: Bielema Drops a Few Bombshells

Earlier today Bret Bielema along with new hires Matt Canada (Offensive Coordinator) and Zach Azzanni (WR’s) did a small meet and greet with the media and there were many people anxious to get a question or two the way of the new guys around Camp Randall.  Unfortunately we weren’t able to be there in person to bring you our own impressions of what they had to say, but fellow media member Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel was and he gave his impressions.

What ended up coming out of the event was some really big news affecting the 2012 Badgers program via Bret Bielema himself.  He notified the media that All-Big Ten linebacker Mike Taylor and Ethan Armstrong both had hip surgeries and wouldn’t be available for Spring football camp.

If that wasn’t a nugget enough for you, one of our Top 6 Stories of the 2012 offseason got an early update when Bielema also let everyone know that QB Jon Budmayr has been throwing the football for a bit now and is about 85-90% back.

Now the first bit of news could just be to clean up some lingering issues and shouldn’t be seen as bad news other than getting on the field with their new position coach (reported to be Andy Buh).

The news about Budmayr on the other is very good to hear.  Going into 2012 with so many unknowns at the QB position we at least have someone the staff can have a sense of what to expect from on the field in game action in a very positive way.  However, I will be taking a very big wait and see approach to Budmayr because anytime you’re dealing with an elbow injury and a throwing motion it very well could flare up again.

He also did state that Curt Phillips would participate in Spring practice, probably on a limited basis like Budmayr will.

These are some very interesting developements indeed for Badgers fans and I’ll leave you with the fact that Bielema also did state that he expects to have the offensive line coach filled very soon, like sometime in the next few days soon.  However, the rest of the staff may not be formally hired until the end of the recruiting period according to Bielema and other reports as well.  So make sure to stay tuned here as we bring you any breaking and confirmed news on the coaching staff transition.
