Former Cardinals Draft Pick Stirring Up Trouble

“Big Brother” contestant Devin Shepherd might be recognizable to some fans out there…and, no, it’s not because he resembles a certain former WWE Superstar.

The former professional baseball player (and Dwayne Johnson lookalike) was drafted in the fifth round by the Minnesota Twins in 2006.  Two years later, he found himself selected by the St. Louis Cardinals and even played some minor league ball for the team in both 2008 and 2010.  But regardless what he accomplished on the baseball field (and it wasn’t much), it’s his recent moves inside the “Big Brother” house that may have just cemented his legacy.

Is Devin for real? Outing your alliance this early? This guy is going to get toasted and it will be glorious. #BB16

You see, the 26-year-old motor cycle sales manager has been running roughshod through the house, seemingly making deals with anyone who will listen.  Initially, it was Shepherd and the rest of the first wave of cast members calling themselves the “Crazy Eights”.  Then, he formed a partnership with groundskeeper Donny and the poorly named “Double D” alliance.  Naturally, when another group came a callin’ (this time, the “Bomb Squad”), our former outfielder happily obliged.  Heck, he even enlisted two of his female roommates to join the then-six person all-male alliance.

Suffice it to say, each of these pairings is likely to blow up in Shepherd’s face.  But, it turns out, Shepherd’s poor judgment on the CBS reality show is just the latest in what seems to be a string of bad decisions.

In his pre-show interview, the single father opens about leaving his career as a professional baseball player.  He talks about leaving his gig with the St. Louis Cardinals to take care of his young daughter.  Commendable right?  Problem is, that stint with the Cards lasted a mere 65 games spread across two seasons, he was released by the team…and it was before his daughter was even conceived.

So what else do we know about Shepherd’s career on the diamond?

In 2007, the then-freshman was kicked off the University of Oklahoma baseball team.  He’d resurface at the College of Southern Nevada…just outside Las Vegas.  From there, he’d go one to get drafted by the Cardinals, get sent to rookie ball and, for some reason, not return for the 2009 campaign.  Depending on where you look, Shepherd either spent 2009 on the sidelines due to “family matters” or because he was suspended.  My guess is it’s the latter given the recent revelation of dude being arrested in September of that year on a litany of charges.

Shepherd would return to the field in 2010…but not for long.  According to conversations he’s had under the watchful eye of “Big Brother”, dude has admitted to being sent to rehab by the Cardinals organization after being convicted of driving under the influence.  On July 20, supposedly a week before he was to be released into a sober house, the slugger was given his walking papers by the team.

From there, Shepherd would spend the next two years with three different Frontier League franchises.  Ultimately, he would leave baseball in 2012, after a subpar beginning to his season.

Now, it stands to be seen whether or not Shepherd can turn around his early misfortunes within the house and become a player in this game…but fickle players with checkered pasts who try too hard out of the gate don’t always fair the best.

Sorry fans.
