Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel announced this past week that former Gamecock running back Demetris Summers has been released from the team.
Summers joined the Stamps in May of 2008 and spent the past two seasons with the club. Last fall, he had 29 kickoff returns for 716 yards.
“With Demetris, what is known is he had a couple injuries that prevented him from being on the field for as much as we would’ve liked him to be on the field,” said Hufnagel. “We’re making a commitment to have a special-teams player, a return guy, that can do both kickoffs and punt returns and that’s kind of what hurt Demetris’ future on our football team.”
In 2008, his first season with the Stamps, Summers led the team in kickoff return yards, 657, and ranked fourth in rushing and third in punt returns. His 274 all-purpose yards at Toronto on Sept. 27, 2008 was the highest single-game total by a Stamps player in 2008.
He was a member of the 2008 Grey Cup-champion Stampeders, and recorded the longest kickoff return in Stampeders playoff history with a 91-yarder against Edmonton on Nov. 15, 2009.
Former Gamecock Derek Watson is still a member of the Stampeders. No word on where Mr. Summers will end up yet.
