Former Sacramento Kings great Mitch Richmond will be at Firestone Grill on 16th and L St. today from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. This will be the first appearance for Richmond in the capital city since Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson announced him as one of the 20-plus local investors willing to throw in $1-million each toward the city’s efforts to keep the team in town.
Richmond is currently a finalist for the 2013 Naismith Hall of Fame class. He spent spent seven seasons in a Kings uniform after coming over in a trade from Golden State for Billy Owens before the 1991-92 season. The former Kansas State Wildcat averaged 21 points per game over his 14-year career, including averaging 21.5 points or more in each of his first 10 seasons in the league.
He was traded to the Washington Wizards along with Otis Thorpe for Chris Webber following the 1997-98 season. He spent three years with the Wizards before retiring as a member of the 2001-02 Los Angeles Lakers.
The six-time All-Star is ready to join a group of local investors hoping to keep the team in Sacramento. While Richmond has not been a visible figure on the Sacramento basketball scene since his retirement, his storied No. 2 jersey hangs in the rafters of Sleep Train Arena, something he would like to see continue.
