Eric Thames barely made a dent during his time in the Major Leagues.
The slugger spent the better part of five years being shuffling between four different franchises in five years. In his 181 big league games, he hit just .250 with 21 home runs. Prior to the 2014 season, Thames took his game to the Korean Baseball Organization and exploded…hitting .343 with 37 home runs and knocking in 121 runs for the NC Dinos.
This season…he’s making history.
Thames is currently in the midst of a monster season, with a .387 batting average, 37 home runs and 29 stolen bases through just 100 games and on Tuesday, the former Blue Jays outfielder secured his place in the record books by becoming the only player in KBO history to hit for the cycle twice in one season. He hit for his first cycle April 9.
Only 16 players have hit for the cycle in the 33-year history of the KBO. The league’s all-time hits leader, Yang Joon-hyuk, is the only other player to have hit for the cycle twice. He did it in both 1996 and 2003.
Oh, in case you were wondering, only John Reilly (1884), Tip O’Neill (1887), Babe Herman (1931) and Aaron Hill (2012) have hit for the cycle twice in one season in the Majors.
