WVLT in Knoxville, Tennessee is reporting that former Brewers prospect and current University of Tennessee safety Brent Brewer was arrested early Sunday on charges of domestic assault. He was released on $1,500 bond, according to the TV station.
Tennessee coach Derek Dooley has suspended Brewer until an investigation of the incident is complete:
“Without knowing all the facts, any domestic incident warrants a suspension from all team-related activities until a thorough investigation is concluded. We respect everyone’s right to the legal process, but also acknowledge a greater standard of conduct associated with the privilege of being a member of the Tennessee football team.”
By the end of the 2010 football season, Brewer had played his way into the Vols’ starting secondary. Now it’s questionable if he’ll even be allowed to return to the program.
Milwaukee drafted Brewer in the 2nd round of the 2006 draft, signing him away from a football scholarship at Florida State. A terrific athlete, the Brewers tried to keep him at shortstop, but the raw tools never translated into results with the glove or the bat. He hit .240/.305/.345 in 5 minor league seasons, rising to Double A Huntsville last season before walking away from the game to go to Tennessee.
Update (2/15/11): According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, police reports allege that Brewer attempted to strangle a woman in his apartment, and that after the incident, the woman had “visible marks on both sides and the front of her neck, left wrist and both arms.” Brewer’s attorney issued a statement saying that his client is innocent and is declining to comment beyond that.
