As the Sacramento Kings get set to play the Detroit Pistons tomorrow, a mutual connection between the two teams is now chasing his hoop dreams overseas.
After finishing last year with the Kings and failing to make the Pistons out of training camp, Terrence Williams has signed a contract to play with the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association.
There is no doubting that Williams has NBA talent. Drafted by the New Jersey Nets with the 11th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, he has struggled to find a good fit as a professional, moving from the Nets to the Houston Rockets then inking a 10-day contract with the Kings late last season.
While Williams played well for the Kings, averaging nine points, four rebounds and three assists per game in a little over 20 minutes of action, the Kings let him leave in free agency. Instead of keeping Williams, they used a future second rounder to obtain defensive-minded James Johnson from the Toronto Raptors to fill their void at the small forward position. Following the conclusion of last season, Williams told Cowbell Kingdom that he hoped for a three-year deal to stay in Sacramento.
Williams remains an enigma around the league. His talent is tantalizing, but concerns of chemistry issues have plagued him throughout his career. He should have an opportunity to rehabilitate his image, while showcasing his talent for one of China’s premier teams, where he will be joined by another former NBA lottery pick in Yi Jianlian.
