The Red Sox just got swept by the Angels and hoped to stop the skid when they took on the Athletics. Unfortunately, Aaron Cook and basically every other pitcher who took the mound was not having their best day and once again the Sox were pummeled by former Sox to an embarrassing 20-2 loss.
It was clear from the beginning that Aaron Cook didn’t have his best stuff. The sinker ball was not sinking and therefore instead of getting groundouts, he was either giving up hits or fly ball outs. The outfield was getting a workout. Cook gave up 4 runs in the 2nd inning when an RBI double to former Sox Moss, an RBI single to Gomes and a 2 run HR to Donaldson. In the 3rd, Cook gave up a RBI double to former Sox Moss and an RBI single to Gomes. Sox 0-6. That was it for Cook. He was out and Tazawa was in. In the top of the 4th, the Sox got on the scoreboard when Salty hit his 23rd HR of the season. Sox 1-6.
Tazawa pitched a scoreless 4th and then handed it over to Alfredo Aceves in the 5th. Good to know that Aceves can still give up the long ball when he is in the mop up role. Aceves hit Cespedes with a pitch and then gave up a HR to Moss. Sox 1-8. Daniel Bard made his debut since being recalled by the Sox. Bard gave up a solo HR to former Sox George Kottaras. Sox 1-9.
The Sox got another run in the top of the 7th when Gomez hit a sac grounder to score Ciriaco. Sox 2-9. Then the bottom of the 7th happened and it went from bad to epicly worse. Breslow took the mound for the Sox. He Breslow loaded the bases with one out and then Donaldson reached on a fielding error by Gomez. Sox 2-10. Then Kottaras hit an RBI single to have the Sox down 2-12. Breslow was out and Melancon was in. Melancon gave up an RBI double to Pennington, a walk to Crisp and then an RBI single to Stephen Drew. Sox 2-14. Then former Sox Josh Reddick came to the plate and of course hit a grand slam off of Melancon. Sox 2-18. It was the inning that just would never end. Somehow Melancon got the 2 outs to get out of the inning. In the 8th, Vicente Padilla took the mound. Padilla gave up a 2 run homerun to former Sox George Kottaras. Kott has had 3 HRs since being with the As and two of them were last night against his former team. Sox 2-20.
This game was brutal. For east coast fans the game didn’t start until 10pm and then we had to watch the Sox give up 20 runs throughout the game. Brutal.
