Former Spur Smith selects ‘Iceman’ to his all-time Top 5

Steve SmithFormer San Antonio Spurs guard Steve Smith recently recognized another former Spur in an interview for Forbes.

Aside from speaking on the lockout, the differences between 1998 and this year, he was asked to name his top five players.

Q. Can you name it your top five current or former players? Who would be your starting five?

Smith: Spencer Haywood at Center. Chris Webber and Derrick Coleman at the Forward positions. George Gervin and Magic Johnson at the Guard spots. Jalen Rose as the sixth man. I would be the Coach/GM. Those are all guys from the State of Michigan and Detroit. That is our fraternity.

While Smith decided to go the rout of picking players from Michigan, including Gervin, who went to Eastern Michigan University, I’m sure if he were to pick amongst former teammates, Tim Duncan would’ve certainly made the cut.

Smith, who played 14 years in the NBA, was traded to the Spurs by the Portland Trailblazers in 2001 for Derek Anderson and Steve Kerr. Smith played for the Spurs for two years, starting a majority of the games his first year at shooting guard. He won a championship with the Spurs in 2003 and is now a studio analyst for NBA TV.
