There are highs and lows of all college football programs. For UConn (1-4, 0-2 AAC), it doesn’t get much higher than the days of Dan Orlovsky as its quarterback.
The Shelton, CT native could have accepted offers from bigger programs at Purdue or Michigan State, but he decided to play for his local Huskies. In his junior year, Orlovsky led the team to a 9-3 record while throwing for 3,485 yards and 33 touchdowns. He is seen as the face of UConn football during the transition into the D-1 ranks and the Big East Conference during the early 2000s.
So what exactly does Orlovsky, now in his 10th NFL season, feel about his alma mater a decade later? During UConn’s game against Temple, Orlovsky took to Twitter to voice his opinion.
Responding to a tweet right after Chandler Whitmer threw a pick-six on the opening drive of the game, Orlovsky said, “just hard to watch nowadays.” He also brought up the r-word that UConn hasn’t been able to capture in recent years: recruiting.
@desmondconner just hard to watch nowadays…

@desmondconner recruit recruit recruit. Find one. They are out there. Find one, coach em, and let em take Uconn back to where it should be

The school record holder for pass completions, pass attempts, passing yards, touchdown passes and total yards does have a point.
According to 247Sports.com rankings, UConn only landed four of the top 23 in-state recruits for the class of 2014 (five in total), losing many Connecticut products to schools like UMass (5), Boston College (2) and other in-state schools like Yale and Brown.
Of the 16 commits for the class of 2015, none are from Connecticut. First year head coach Bob Diaco wasn’t only brought in for his defensive-minded style of play, but also for his ability to recruit in the state of New Jersey, and the numbers back that up. Six of the 16 commits come from the Garden State — Diaco’s home state.
The only quarterback of the class, Tyler Davis comes from Bellmore, NY and has led his high school team to a 3-1 record so far this season.
Nevertheless, Diaco said in this week’s press conference that Tim Boyle, from Middlefield, CT, is the quarterback of the future for the Huskies. Sitting at 1-4, the future can’t come quick enough for UConn and the coaching staff. If there is any silver lining from Orlovsky’s tweets, it could be a hint at his future after the NFL.
@MCPSPIO @desmondconner lol long time ago. Maybe one day I’ll be the HC!?!

Head coach Orlovsky? I can buy into that, and so would in-state recruits.
