On Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles officially named Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson head coach as Kansas City was eliminated from the playoffs on Saturday. Pederson will be introduced as Eagles head coach on Tuesday afternoon. With Pederson now in the fold, he has already begun putting his staff together.
Earlier today, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported that former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich is expected to join Pederson’s staff as the Eagles offensive coordinator.
Reich was recently fired earlier this month by the Chargers after only being the offensive coordinator for two seasons. This season, the Chargers’ offense struggled as rookie running back Melvin Gordon never got on track, while the offensive line and wide receiver corps suffered injuries. San Diego’s rushing offense was ranked 31st in the NFL with 84.9 yards per game and their scoring offense was ranked 26th in the NFL averaging 20 points per game.
While those numbers are pedestrian, this season Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers passed for a career-high in completions (437) and attempts (661) to go along with 4,792 yards, 29 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
It will be interesting to see what Reich can do with an Eagles offense that will have a new quarterback under center as it looks like Sam Bradford is all but gone. Whoever the quarterback is, Reich should be able to help him out as the Eagles have a three-headed monster at running back and young wide receivers.
