Penn State point guard Tim Frazier was named a first team All-Big Ten selection tonight by the media, and second team by the coaches. Frazier becomes the seventh Nittany Lion selected to the first team during their 20 years in the Big Ten. The last was Talor Battle, who received the honor in both 2009 and 2011.
During the 2011-2012 season, Frazier leads the team in four of the five major statistical categories, sans blocks. Heading into the Big Ten Tournament, the junior from Houston is averaging 18.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 6.3 APG and 2.3 SPG. No. 12 Penn State, the tournament’s lowest seed, will square off against No. 5 Indiana on Thursday at 1:55 p.m. at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
After a rebuilding year which saw Penn State finish the regular season with a 12-19 record, Frazier will look to build off his stellar campaign next year during Head Coach Pat Chambers’ second year. With an emerging Jermaine Marshall, a healthy Trey Lewis and the addition of D.J. Newbill, a Philadelphia native who sat out this season after transferring from Southern Mississippi, Frazier could find himself with multiple back court options to distribute the ball to who all could draw defensive attention away from him.
He was also named to the All-Defensive team. Teammate Billy Oliver, whose playing career came to an end a few weeks ago due to concussion issues, was Penn State’s reciepient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, an award that is given to a member of each team in the conference.
