Each week we will be looking at different free agents that the Minnesota Vikings have on the roster. We will look at their strengths, weakness, and how valuable they are to the team. This week will be focusing on:
LB Chad Greenway:
After playing a three down linebacker for years, Chad Greenway was downgraded to a two down linebacker. And that sentence sums up his career the past couple of years. There has been plenty of talk amongst fans and critics alike that it was time for him to call it day when he became a free agent.
But coming into his 10th season we saw an odd reemergence of Greenway. He had 69 tackles, played his first career game at middle linebacker while Eric Kendricks was out in November for an injury, and the highlight for Vikings fans and Greenway himself was when he brought an interception back 91 yards for a touchdown against San Diego. This was all done while only playing in 17 games and 57.7% of the time and playing a career low 632 snaps.
While Greenway, at 33, isn’t going to be starting anytime soon he can still be an asset to the Vikings on the field and off. The Vikings can keep him at a two down role and realistically he won’t be taking away any prime starting time from Anthony Barr or Kendricks. Not to mention he played a good fill in for both players when they went down with injuries this season. And the Vikings need all they can get with this position. Gerald Hodges was traded and Audie Cole was injured this season and is a free agent as well.
Having someone who has proven work ethic and leadership skills is what the Vikings need for this young team.
