Now that the off-season is upon us, the Minnesota Vikings will be looking to build on the already solid foundation that brought them to the 2015 wild card playoffs and the NFC North Division Championship. Free agency is the first in many steps to bring this team back stronger. We will be looking at different players each week to see if the Vikings should bring them back or decide to let them go.
We will start with CB/PR Marcus Sherels.
Has he better years? Yes. This year he has had a career low with 9 yards per game and has had some questionable plays. But this year he has 36 punt returns for 318 yards, 1 touchdown, 8 special teams tackles and 1 tackle.
His career low withstanding, Sherels has been in the NFL’s top 10 for yards per punt for the past three years, was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his 65 yard punt return for a touchdown against the Chicago Bears and owns four franchise records.
- Longest punt return for 86 yards in 2013
- Single season punt return average -15.2 in 2013
- Most punt return touchdowns in a career -3
- Most punt return yards in a game – 119 on October 21, 2013
We’ve heard the song and dance of will he make it to the next year. And while some believe he shouldn’t for one reason or the other, I believe he should. Sherels has been able to fight off competition at training camp because of his ability to work hard, be consistent in his playmaking skills and produce results for the Vikings. He isn’t the flashiest or the biggest but he is the guy that will work the hardest and in the fickle NFL that is what you want on your team.
