Each week we will be looking at different free agents that the Minnesota Vikings have on the roster. We will look at their strengths, weakness, and how valuable they are to the team. This week will be focusing on:
S Robert Blanton
Robert Blanton was given the chance to make an impact and play alongside Harrison Smith when they were both drafted in 2012. And late in 2013, the Vikings gave Blanton an opportunity to shine. And it looked like he was going to do so in 2014 when he had over 100 tackles, and was the starter in week one. But his star quickly faded throughout the year and has continued to demise since.
He started in 13 games in 2014 but lost that role to Andrew Sendejo, who has been the starter ever since. Last season he played in 17 games but was only the field 20.5% of the time. Even when Sendjeo faced injuries late in the season the Vikings turned to Anthony Harris, Antone Exum Jr. and Terence Newman played before Blanton last season. And when Sendejo was healthy enough to return to the starting position he did, which left Blanton out in the cold once again.
The Vikings need an all the time player to start next to Harrison Smith and unfortunately for Blanton he isn’t the one. Now all hope isn’t lost for Blanton, he could re-sign to compete as a depth player/special teams but I doubt that is on the Vikings radar for him.
