Friday 5: Fathers and Sons

With Father’s Day right around the corner and scores of second (and third!) generation players getting selected in the recent MLB Draft…it’s safe to say baseball has Dads on the mind.

5.  Mel  (43.05 WAR)  and T odd Stottlemyre (23.22) – 66.27 

Like father, like sons?  Mel Stottlemyre had two sons (Todd and Mel Jr.) follow in his footsteps and take their skills to the big leagues…combining for 302 wins.  It’s worth mentioning that Junior went 0-1 during his brief stint with the Kansas City Royals.

4.  Jose Cruz Senior  (54.3)  and Junior (19.47) – 73.77 

In 1992, Jose Cruz Senior had his number retired by the Houston Astros.  In 2008, Junior finished up his 12-year big league career with those same Astros.

3.  Felipe   (42.14)   and Moises Alou  (39.67)  – 81. 81

On two separate occasions, Moises Alou played under his father’s tutelage…from 1992-2001 with the Montreal Expos and 2005-2006 when the pair teamed up for the San Francisco Giants.

2.  Ken Griffey Senior  (34.55)  and Junior (83.65) – 118.20 

In 1989, the Griffeys became the only father and son combo to play in the same season (Senior was with the Reds while Junior was with the Mariners).  The next season, the pair played on the same team and hit back-to-back home runs on September 14, 1990 for the Seattle Mariners!

1.  Bobby (57.61) and Barry Bonds (162.53) – 220.14

Bobby and Barry Bonds are the only father and son duo to hit over 300 home runs (Bobby hit 332 while Barry hit 762) and steal over 400 bases (Bobby stole 461 while Barry stole 514)!
